As lifelong dog enthusiasts who have owned and trained rescue dogs of all shapes and sizes, we found a need for an effective, better designed, higher quality, product that promotes the health and safety of the dog. Whether they are top performance dogs, or just your best friend lying on the couch beside you, they deserve a harness that functions properly.

Dissatisfied with existing dog walking equipment, we consulted veterinarians, veterinary chiropractors, canine massage therapists, rehabilitation specialists, professional dog trainers, and our friends in the dog community as to what would be a more effective and ergonomic dog walking tool.

Based on our fact finding, we set out to design a harness that was ergonomically superior to anything on the market and that would not encourage the dog’s natural opposition reflex to drive their head down and pull. It also was designed to allow the dog to run, sit, swim, play, and compete in sporting events with comfort and without restraint of natural movement.

Most dog harnesses on the market are built on the same flawed logic as a Schutzhund-style protection harness: wide, rigid straps designed to let a dog pull hard against resistance during agitation work. That design makes sense for bite-sport training. It makes no sense for a dog going on a walk, working a scent line, or running a course.

Traditional harnesses, and collars of every type, concentrate pressure on the dog's head, neck, chest, or ribcage. Whenever a dog feels that kind of restraint, its natural physiological response is to lean into it and pull harder — the same reflex that makes a horse push back against a lead rope. So the harness you bought to stop pulling is often the thing teaching your dog to pull. That reflex is especially costly in nose work, where a dog needs to move independently, follow scent at its own pace, and shift direction quickly without fighting its own gear the whole time.

BrilliantK9 harnesses are built differently, from the ground up — and from scratch. Nothing sits on a shelf waiting to be shipped. Every harness is handcrafted to order, cut, sewn, trimmed, and bound one at a time for the specific dog wearing it, using that dog's own measurements rather than a generic size chart. The girth — the strap that wraps around the dog's body — is placed at the dog's natural bend point, at the xyphoid, in the mid-back. That placement matters biomechanically: instead of letting the dog flatten out, drop down, and drive forward against the harness, it encourages the dog to round its back. A rounded back keeps the dog out of opposition reflex, the same bracing-against-pressure response that drives pulling in traditional gear. That same placement at the dog's natural bend point also makes it far harder for a dog to back out and escape — there's no straight, flattened body line for the dog to slip through, so a spooked or fearful dog stays secure instead of getting loose. With no pressure point for the dog's body to fight, and a fit that works with the dog's own posture instead of against it, the pulling reflex never gets triggered in the first place.

That freedom of movement is exactly why our harnesses have become a favorite in the scent work, nose work community. Handlers need a dog that can dive into a search, change direction on a dime, and work low to the ground or into tight spaces without the harness shifting, chafing, or restricting its stride. Our fit gives dogs the full range of motion scent work demands, without a pressure point anywhere on the body to distract from the job at hand. The same design that makes a BrilliantK9 harness ideal for nose work makes it just as effective for everyday walks, agility, and any activity where a dog needs to move like itself.

Additionally, the neck region of the dog has several sensitive structures such as the larynx (voice box), esophagus (food tube), trachea (windpipe), blood vessels, nerves, thyroid gland and lymph nodes. Pressure is also transferred to the cervical spine with more traditional walking tools. Putting pressure on these structures of your dog causes conditions such as laryngeal paralysis, collapsing trachea, cervical disk disease, brachycephalic airway disease etc. and is not recommended.
