6 Signs Your Dog Needs More Exercise

Sure, you walk your dog or take him out to relieve himself, but have you ever thought about how much exercise they really need? Most vets recommend that most dogs get between 30 minutes to two hours of exercise each day. Some dogs will need more. Some breeds are naturally designed to have a more active lifestyle than others.

Can you tell if your dog needs more exercise?

There are some signs that your dog needs more exercise, but it might take a little bit of trial and error on your part. There are a few energetic dog breeds, but even within those breeds, there can be quite a variation in their activity levels. Knowing the reason your dog’s breed was developed initially can help you understand their general activity level. Mixed breeds may be a bit more complex. It’s best to figure out your dog’s needs for yourself.

Try experimenting with different activities and amounts of exercise for your dog. You should start to notice different behaviors as a result. If your dog seems to try to initiate playing with you more, then they may need more exercise. There are several signs to watch for that can help signal to you that your dog needs more exercise.

6 Signs Dogs Need to Exercise More

Sign 1: Your Dog is Gaining Weight

Just like humans, when dogs eat more than they are able to burn off through activity, it can lead to unwanted weight gain. If you notice your dog gaining weight, it may be an indication that they need more exercise. Talk to your vet about what types of dietary changes may help your dog. You may also ask about increasing the length, time, or frequency of daily walks, taking more play breaks, and other ways to increase their activity level in general.

Sign 2: Tearing Up the House

Destructive behavior and behavioral problems are commonly the result of a dog that is not getting enough exercise. Especially high-energy breeds can become bored and frustrated if they don’t get enough exercise and mental stimulation. If you notice your dog has started chewing on things around the house, digging at or scratching doors, or raiding the trash cans, the problem may be the lack of exercise. A brisk run, long walk, or a game of frisbee at least once per day may help reduce their destructive behaviors.

Sign 3: Starting to Withdraw

Some dogs become withdrawn and depressed if they lack mental and physical stimulation. These dogs can be reluctant to engage with their humans, but they just need to get outside and moving to become more involved. However, this can also be a sign of illness. Make sure to consult with a veterinarian if you notice this symptom in your dog. For instance, thyroid dysfunction can make dogs act more sluggish. Make sure to have them checked out physically first.

Sign 4: Hyperactivity

An energy-deficient dog often exhibits poor manners and hyperactivity. This is extremely common in young dogs and dogs that come from energetic breeds. Dogs from some breeds tend to have a lot of drive and energy. If their humans don’t help them use their energy productively, they may become ornery. They may get themselves into trouble, destroy things they shouldn’t, and have a very short attention span. These furry friends just need more interactive exercise time.

Sign 5: Excessive Whining or Barking

Signs four and five may run together a little bit since a dog that is hyperactive may bark or whine more. Sometimes, when a dog is restless, they vocalize it with whining and barking. They just want you to know that they need to burn off more energy. They feel like they need to be doing something – and they probably feel like they need to do it outdoors. Dogs also want to be doing things with their humans. Barking or whining are just the best way they know how to communicate. Providing them with plenty of regular outdoor play times can help solve the issue with excessive barking or whining.

Sign 6: Increased Stiffness

When people have a sedentary lifestyle, their bodies can start to get stiff. It’s no different with dogs, especially older dogs. An inactive lifestyle can lead to joints that are stiff and painful as well as muscle loss. Daily exercise benefits dogs by helping them maintain muscle tone and keeping tendons and ligaments moving and loose. If you notice your dog having trouble with jumping or navigating stairs, talk to your veterinarian to see if there is a health problem like arthritis. Even if your dog has arthritis, though, daily exercise can help keep them limber and able to move about. If you have a senior dog, make sure to keep a pace that is comfortable for them and doesn’t make their health matters worse. Swimming may be a more suitable exercise and lighter, shorter walks.
